Eight Essential Measures That Can Predict Long-Term Heart Health

Discover the eight measures that predict long-term heart health. Learn how EHS assessments measure and improve all eight to protect your future wellbeing.

Cardiovascular disease remains one of Australia’s biggest health challenges, affecting one in every six people. The good news is that your heart health is not predetermined. By focusing on eight health metrics, identified by the American Heart Association, you can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease and improve your overall wellbeing.

These eight measures provide a complete picture of cardiovascular health. They include behaviours you can change as well as clinical factors that can be measured and tracked over time.

The Eight Essential Measures

Four lifestyle behaviours

  • Not smoking or vaping

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Eating a balanced, nutritious diet

  • Staying physically active

Four biometrics

  • Blood pressure

  • Cholesterol

  • Blood sugar

  • Sleep health

Why These Eight Metrics Matter

The research shows that adults who score well on all eight measures have better health outcomes across the board. Not only for cardiovascular disease but also for brain, kidney and metabolic health. Even modest improvements can significantly reduce your risk of future heart problems.

The message is clear: small, consistent steps add up to long-term protection.

How Australians Measure Up

The Heart Foundation of Australia reports that hundreds of thousands of Australians live with long-term coronary conditions, and many more carry silent risk factors without realising it. The Executive Health Index 2024 found that:

  • 62 per cent of executives are overweight or obese.

  • 23 per cent record poor or below-average aerobic fitness.

  • 43 per cent report average to poor sleep quality, which can reduce performance by up to 30 per cent.

These figures show how easily risk can accumulate, and why it is so important to take a proactive approach.

How to Improve Your Score

You do not need to be perfect across all eight measures to benefit. Focus first on what you can control. Move more each day, eat a balanced diet, prioritise good sleep, and avoid smoking. From there, monitor your clinical health measures through regular checks.

At Executive Health Solutions (EHS), our executive health assessments measure all eight domains in one comprehensive session. From cholesterol and blood pressure to sleep quality and fitness testing, you receive a full picture of your current health and a clear plan for improvement.
